Most people seek handyman services when they need home repairs or small projects done. However, to avoid repairs, handyman services should be used for proactive home maintenance as well. While many people might say, “I can do this myself,” the reality is these tasks take time and often either don’t get done or don’t get done often enough. Here are three important home maintenance tasks homeowners often overlook where “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

Flushing Your Water Heater

To prolong the life of your water heater and prevent damage, have your handyman flush your water heater out once a year. If you have unusually hard water, your tank should be flushed every six months. When your water heater is not flushed out regularly, mineral sediment can build up inside the tank, often causing banging or rumbling noises as the water passes through it. As sediment builds up, it becomes more difficult for your handyman or plumber to flush your water heater out, which can lead to the bottom of the tank rusting out.

Cleaning Your Dryer Vent

The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. Close to 3,000 home clothes dryer fires are reported every year, resulting in deaths, injuries, and millions of dollars in property losses. Clothes dryers that are centrally located in houses are more prone to plugging because of their longer duct systems. It is recommended that your handyman professionally clean your duct work out at least once a year. This also ensures your dryer runs efficiently. If you are experiencing longer drying times or strong odors, these are signs your vent is plugged and you should seek handyman services immediately.

Cleaning Your Refrigerator Coils

To prevent shortening the life of your refrigerator and/or costly repairs, you should have your refrigerator coils cleaned every six months to a year, or more often if you have shedding pets. Even if your refrigerator has "Never Clean" condenser coils, you should still have the condenser housing cleaned. Although dust doesn't collect on the coils, it collects on the cage-like housing, and this can interfere with air circulation.
